Queries from the Qur'an

Q:

1. If the Quran says the earth was created in seven days why do we find evidence to the contrary? 2. Why does the Quran put men a degree above woman? 3. Why does the Quran command us to be peaceful in one verse but then switch its tone to an aggressive one later?

A:

*Answer 1:*

With regards to the creation of the earth, the Qur'an states: Your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then settled Himself firmly on the Throne... (Qur'an, 7:54) The evidence stating the contrary is provided by scientists, who conduct their research and come to a certain conclusion. However, that conclusion may not be a fact, but merely what they have discovered at that point of time. A more learned scientist can have a different opinion about such a topic, or with the advancement of science, discoveries can be made at a later stage which may have different outcomes. Since Allah is the All-Knowing and All-Wise, and the Holy Qur'an is His Perfect Word, we need to further look into this verse to try and understand whether the "days" are the same 24 hour days that we understand, or whether they mean something else, such as a period of time. *Answer 2:*

Firstly, it is important to note that the Qur'an mentions, very clearly, that man and woman have been created equal. No one is superior to the other; colour, race and gender are not the distinguishing factors. What makes a person superior over the other is his/her level of piety, as mentioned in the verse below:

O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise each other). *Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you*. And Allah has full knowledge and is well- acquainted (with all things).

The verse that usually brings about confusion states: [4:34] Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means.

Since the responsibility of undertaking and providing the subsistence and supporting the family financially, according to Islam, is on man, the overlord in this honourable verse of Quran, has introduced men as the supporter of women. They are responsible for undertaking the subsistence of life and providing the expenses of family members. Therefore, *the above verse does not mean that men are superior or excelsior in comparison with women*, but it is an expression of responsibility for men in front of the family as protectors and maintainers.

*Answer 3:*

The Holy Qur'an contains both gentle and aggressive styles of speech. However, it speaks with kindness more often, and is only harsh and aggressive in its stance when required. While it may seem that this harshness is the opposite of love, one realises that the warnings of Allah, while expressed in a seemingly aggressive manner, are in itself an expression of love, if man is obedient and heedful of Allah.
